Despite และ Inspite of/ Although/ Though/ Even though เป็นคำเชื่อมภาษาอังกฤษสำคัญๆ การใช้คำเชื่อมเหล่านี้อย่างถูกต้องและชำนาญ จะช่วยให้ผู้เรียนภาษาอังกฤษเชื่อมโยงและเสนอความคิดในการพูดและการเขียนดีขึ้น อย่างไรก็ตาม ไม่ใช่ทุกคนที่เข้าใจชัดเจนเกี่ยวกับโครงสร้างประโยคและการใช้ของทุกคำเชื่อมทุกคำ โดยเฉพาะคำเชื่อมที่มีความคล้ายคลึงกันและสับสนได้ง่าย

บาทบทความนี้ ELSA ขอแบ่งปันวิธีแยกแยะคำเชื่อม 2 กลุ่ม ที่ทำให้ผู้เรียนภาษาอังกฤษค่อนข้างลำบาก นั่นก็คือกลุ่มที่มีคำเชื่อม 3 คำได้แก่ although/though/even though และกลุ่มที่มีคำเชื่อม 2 คำได้แก่ despite/in spite of

Though/Although/Even though และ Despite/In spite of มีความคล้ายคลึงกันดังต่อไปนี้

คำเชื่อมทั้ง 2 กลุ่มนี้หมายความว่า แต่ แม้ว่า หรืออย่างไรก็ตาม มากกว่านั้น ทั้ง 2 กลุ่มนี้ยังแสดงความสัมพันธ์ว่า หากสถานะ A ที่มีอยู่ สถานะ B จะไม่ได้รับผลกระทบ อีกด้วย

วิเคราะห์ แม้ว่าทั้ง 2 ประโยคนี้มีโครงสร้างและความหมายแตกต่างกัน แต่ต่างก็อธิบายถึงสถานการณ์ “เธอปวดหัว” โดยไม่ส่งผลต่อสถานะ “เธอก็ไปทำงาน”

วิเคราะห์ ทั้งสองประโยคดังกล่าว แม้มีโครงสร้างไม่เหมือนกัน และมีการใช้คำที่ต่างกัน แต่ต่างอธิบายถึงสถานการณ์เดียวกันคือ เธอปวดหัว และไม่ส่งผลกระทบถึงการกระทำอื่นคือ เธอก็ไปทำงาน

โครงสร้างของ Although/ Though/ Even though

‘although’ ‘though’ และ ‘even though’ ใช้เชื่อมสองอนุประโยคในประโยคที่ซับซ้อน และมีทั้งสองโครงสร้างดังต่อไปนี้ 

โครงสร้างประโยคที่ 1

Although / though / even though + อนุประโยคที่ 1, อนุประโยคที่ 2

หมายเหตุ คุณอย่าลืมเครื่องหมาย “,“ ระหว่าง 2 อนุประโยคนะ

ตัวอย่าง

– Although Emily lives far from the company, she is never late for work.

⟶ แม้ว่า Emily อยู่ไกลจากสำนักงาน แต่เธอก็ไม่เคยไปทำงานสาย

– Though they don’t really like him, they always treat him nicely.

⟶ แม้ว่าพวกเขาไม่ชอบเขาจริงๆ แต่ก็ปฏิบัติต่อเขาอย่างดีเสมอ

– Last week, even though my boss gave me lots of tasks, I didn’t feel stressed.

อนุประโยคที่ 1, though/ even though + อนุประโยคที่ 2

หมายเหตุ Although ปกติจะไม่ใช้ในโครงสร้างนี้ อย่าลืมเครื่องหมาย , ระหว่างสองอนุประโยคนะ

ตัวอย่าง

– They always treat him nicely, though they don’t really like him.

⟶ พวกเขาปฏิบัติต่อเขาอย่างดีเสมอ แต่จริงๆ ว่าพวกเขาไม่ชอบเขา

– Last week, I didn’t feel stressed, even though my boss gave me lots of tasks.

โครงสร้างประโยคของ Despite/ In spite of        

ไม่เหมือนกับ Although/ Though/ Even though คำเชื่อมอีก 2 คำคือ Despite/ In spite of ไม่เชื่อม 2 อนุประโยคกัน แต่เชื่อมคำนาม วลี หรือ v-ing กับอนุประโยค Despite/ In spite of ถูกใช้ตามโครงสร้างประโยค 2 โครงสร้างต่อไปนี้

โครงสร้างประโยคที่ 1

Despite/ In spite of + (วลี) คำนาม/ v-ing + อนุประโยค

ตัวอย่าง

– Despite the heavy rain, he went out to find her.

⟶ ถึงแม้ว่าฝนตกหนัก เขาก็ไปหาเธอ

⟶ หลังจาก “despite” คือนามวลี “the heavy rain”

– Despite having a sore throat, she won that singing competition.

⟶ แม้จะเจ็บคอ แต่เธอก็ชนะการประกวดร้องเพลงนั้น

⟶ หลังจาก “despite” คือวลี “having a sore throat” โดย  v-ing “having” อยู่ข้างต้น

– In spite of his bad attitude, he got the position.

⟶ ถึงแม้ว่าเขามีทัศนคติที่ไม่ดี แต่ก็ได้รับตำแหน่งนี้

⟶ หลังจาก “In spite of” คือนามวลี “his bad attitude”

– In spite of studying hard, John didn’t pass that exam.

⟶ ถึงแม้ว่าขยันเรียน แต่ John ก็สอบไม่ผ่าน

⟶ หลังจาก “In spite of” คือวลี “studying hard” โดย v-ing “studying” อยู่ข้างต้น

โครงสร้างประโยค ที่ 2

อนุประโยค + despite/ in spite of + (วลี) คำนาม/v-ing

ตัวอย่าง

– He went out to find her despite the heavy rain.

⟶ เขาไปหาเธอ ทั้งๆ ที่ฝนตกหนัก

– He got the position in spite of his bad attitude.

⟶ เขาชนะตำแหน่งนั้น แม้จะมีทัศนคติที่ไม่ดีก็ตาม

– John didn’t pass that exam in spite of studying hard.

⟶ Johnสอบไม่ผ่าน แม้ว่าขยันเรียน

เปลี่ยนประโยคที่ใช้ Though เป็นประโยคที่ใช้ Despite

หากอยากเปลี่ยนประโยคที่ใช้ “although” “though” หรือ “even though” เป็นประโยคที่ใช้ “despite” หรือ “in spite of” เราแค่เปลี่ยนอนุประโยคที่มีคำเชื่อมเหล่านี้ ส่วนอีกอนุกประโยคยังเหมือนเดิม

การเปลี่ยนประโยคที่ใช้ “although” “though” หรือ “even though” จะขึ้นอยู่กับรูปแบบดั้งเดิม โดยมี 8 กรณี ที่เจอบ่อยที่สุด ได้แก่

ประธานของทั้ง 2 อนุประโยคมีความเหมือนกัน

สำหรับอนุประโยคที่มี “although” “though” หรือ “even though” เราจะลบประธานแล้วเปลี่ยนเป็นคำกริยาหรือ Gerund (-ing form ที่ทำหน้าที่เป็นคำนาม) ต้องดูดีๆ ว่า หากประธานคือชื่อเฉพาะ เราก็ต้องนำชื่อนี้ไปอยู่อีกอนุประโยค

ตัวอย่าง

– Although/ Though/ Even though she didn’t have much money, she bought the doll for her daughter.

⟶ Despite/ In spite of not having much money, she bought that doll for her daughter

⟶ แม้ว่ามีเงินไม่เยอะ แต่เธอก็ซื้อตุ๊กตาตัวนั้นให้ลูกสาว

 – Although/ Though/ Even though David lives near the company, he always goes to work late. 

⟶ Despite/ In spite of living near the company, David always goes to work late. 

⟶ แม้ว่าอาศัยอยู่ใกล้กับบริษัท แต่ David ก็ยังไปทำงานสายอยู่เสมอ

⟶ แม้ว่ามีครอบครัวที่ร่ำรวย แต่เธอก็เป็นคนที่ถ่อมตัวมาก

อนุประโยคที่มี Although/ Though/ Even though ซึ่งมีคำสรรพนามมีรูปแบบ  (I/we/ you/he/she/it และ they)/คำนาม (วลี) + be + คำคุณศัพท์

หากประธานเป็นคำสรรพนาม เราจะเปลี่ยนคำสรรพนามเป็นคำคุณศัพท์แสดงความเป็นเจ้าของตามลำดับ หากประธานเป็นนามวลี เราจะใช้เกี่ยวกับการครอบครอง ’s หลังจากนั้น ลบ be แล้วเปลี่ยนคำคุณศัพท์เป็นคำนาม

ตัวอย่าง

– Although/ Though/ Even though though she is unfriendly, they like her.

⟶ Despite/ In spite of her unfriendliness, they like her.

⟶ แม้ว่าเธอซึ่งไม่เป็นมิตร แต่พวกเขาก็ชอบเธอ

– We love our parents, even though/ though they are strict.  

⟶ We love our parents despite/ in spite of their strictness.

⟶ เรารักพ่อแม่ แม้ว่าพวกเขาจะเข้มงวดก็ตาม

– Although/ Though/ Even though his mother is impatient, he loves her.

⟶ Despite/ In spite of his mother’s impatience, he loves her.

⟶ แม้ว่าแม่ของเขาไม่อดทน แต่เขาก็รักเธอ

อนุประโยคที่มี Although/ Though/ Even though ซึ่งมีคำสรรพนามมีรูปแบบ  (I/we/ you/he/she/it และ they)/คำนาม (วลี) + คำกริยา + คำวิเศษณ์

หากประธานเป็นคำสรรพนาม เราจะเปลี่ยนคำสรรพนามเป็นคำคุณศัพท์แสดงความเป็นเจ้าของตามลำดับ หากประธานเป็นนามวลี เราจะใช้เกี่ยวกับการครอบครอง ’s หลังจากนั้น เปลี่ยนคำกริยาเป็นคำนาม และเปลี่ยนคำวิเศษณ์เป็นคำคุณศัพท์แล้ววางไว้หน้าคำนาม

ตัวอย่าง

–  Although/ Though/ Even though he behaved badly, she forgave him.

⟶ Despite/ In spite of his bad behavior, she forgave him.

⟶ แม้ว่าเขาประพฤติตัวไม่ดี แต่เธอก็ให้อภัยเขา

– Although/ Though/ Even though her boyfriend drove carelessly, she was calm.

⟶ Despite/ In spite of her boyfriend’s careless driving, she was calm.

⟶ แม้ว่าแฟนของเธอขับรถโดยประมาท แต่เธอก็ยังคงใจสงบ

อนุประโยคที่มี Although/ Though/ Even though ซึ่งมีมีรูปแบบ There + be + คำนาม

ในกรณีนี้ เราจะลบ There + be

– Although/ Though/ Even though there were lots of people room, it was very quiet there. 

⟶ Despite/ In spite of lots of people in the room, it was very quiet there.

⟶ แม้ว่าผู้คนมากมายในห้อง แต่ก็เงียบมาก

– I’m still healthy, though/ even though there is a problem with my lifestyle. 

⟶ I’m still healthy despite/ in spite of a problem with my lifestyle.

⟶ ฉันมีสุขภาพดี แม้ว่ามีปัญหาเกี่ยวกับวิถีชีวิตของตนเอง

อนุประโยคที่มี Although/ Though/ Even though ซึ่งมีมีรูปแบบ  คำนาม + be + คำคุณศัพท์สภาพอากาศ

ในกรณีนี้ เราจะลบ be เปลี่ยนคำคุณศัพท์สภาพอากาศเป็นคำนามและเติม “the” นำหน้าคำนาม

ตัวอย่าง

– Yesterday, we went to the zoo, though/even though it was rainy.

⟶ Yesterday, we went to the zoo despite/ in spite of the rain.

⟶ เมื่อวานเราไปสวนสัตว์ ทั้งๆ ที่ฝนตก

อนุประโยคที่มี Although/ Though/ Even though ซึ่งมีมีรูปแบบ (วลี) คำนาม + be + V3/ Ved

เปลี่ยน V3/ Ved เป็นคำนาม เติม  “the” นำหน้าคำนามและเติม  “of” ด้านหลังคำนาม (วลี) คำนามมีหน้าที่ประธานของประโยคเริ่มต้นจะถูกเลื่อนลงมาตามหลัง “of”

ตัวอย่าง

Although/ Though/ Even though dishwashers were invented, many people still have to wash the dishes themselves.

⟶ Despite/ In spite of the invention of dishwashers, many people still have to wash the dishes themselves.

⟶ แม้ว่ามีการประดิษฐ์เครื่องล้างจาน แต่หลายคนก็ยังล้างจานด้วยตัวเอง

วิธีง่ายที่สุดคือ เปลี่ยน Although/ Though/ Even though เป็น Despite/ In spite of แล้วเติม “the fact that” และคงอนุประโยคที่หลังเหมือนเดิม

ตัวอย่าง

Although/ Though/ Even though I don’t have many friends, I never feel lonely.  

⟶ Despite/ In spite of the fact that I don’t have many friends, I never feel lonely. 

⟶ ถึงแม้ว่าฉันมีเพื่อนไม่มเยอะ แต่ก็ไม่เคยรู้สึกเหงาเลย
